I assume that by "it produces no sound from the command line" you mean that mplayer produces no sound. Both mplayer and Slimserver can be run from the command line, so your message isn't clear.
If you are running mplayer from the command line, terminal will show a lot of information about what is happening, and a post of this information will help us to diagnose the problem.
