Jakey, Yes you should see multiple processes:
mplayer itself creates two processes (I think it is a main controlling one and one to actually do the streaming) mplayer.sh creates a sub process to monitor itself the last one appears to be the shell which involks mplayer. The problem you are experiencing sounds like the mplayer bug which can garble a live stream. This is a problem with mplayer rather than Alien...
