thrashing around rather than thinking logically!

The debug info confirms that we are talking about

C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread\mplayer.exe

That is dated 26 June 2005 19:37. I thought that I had unzipped it
from MPlayer-mingw32-1.0pre7.zip. On closer inspection, that zip
file's mplayer is dated 17 April 2005 15:47. To cut a long story
short, it all works with the older version, but not the newer one.

The memory is a bit murky but, I think that when I first had the
problem, I decided that a newer mplayer had to be better -- obviously
not!

Triode my apologies for the tortuous trail, and thanks - I couldn't
have done it without you!!

Thanks again,

Nick
