Can't comment on the cpu load thing as I've not familar with macs and so other than typing ps & top (unix commands) I'm sure what to suggest!
As for mplayer - I think you should see two mplayers and two mplayer.sh processes during playback. If the stream ends or you press stop all should die or be killed off.
