Got it!!

d_files showed where the problem was.

I thought that ~/ referred to a user's home directory. Evidently if it
does then the relevant user when slimserver is running is not myself
(even when I am the user running the terminal). Or  something of the
sort, because

Changing ~/Public/scripts 

to

/Users/myusername/Public/scripts

has solved the issue.
