When I came across the problem in July and I did some checking to see if
any had come across the bug before. They had and Neil Sleightholm had
"officially" logged the problem in July 2005. I dug some more and
found people first logged the problem in some form as long as 18 months
ago. The stumbling block was that people knew the symptoms but didn't
know the cause and put it down to some proprietary RealAudio mechanism
which couldn't be divined. It took me a few weeks to understand the
problem and determine that it was a bug in the implementation and
fixable.

I submitted an initial version of the patch to the Mplayer group around
Sept and I got some architectural objections to it. However I also found
out the patch didn't work all the time so I worked with neil and
AlienBBC forum to get a larger test base.

I can't think of any reason why the Mplayer group (actually FFMpeg)
are rewriting this file now except perhaps I pinpointed the flaw and my
patch was a band-aid rather than fixing the implementation.

It's a bit like the buses - people have waited for a fix for over a
year and then suddenly two come along at once.
