I'm stumped! It looks like mplayer is starting but not writing anything before being timed out. I think the error "readlen undef: (Unknown error)10054" just means there wasn't any data to read.
The only other thing I can think of is that there is a firewall blocking mplayer but only when it is started via the slim.exe. Do you have a firewall or virus suite installed? The windows firewall shouldn't matter but you could try disabling it.
