Absolutely right; SlimScrobbler does temporarily write to a file but the file is deleted after a successful submission - and it's not exactly human readable.
With SlimScrobbler you can also see your recent submitted tracks at www.last.fm, via the profile editor - it's not exactly obvious how to navigate there, but it might be what you're after? A local history might be an interesting addition to SlimScrobbler if you fancied having a go, Malcolm :) Hakan was suggesting something along similar lines fairly recently, as a basis for a smart playlists system.
