The issue is with Winsock Layered Service Providers. The DuplicateHandle API only works with a 'Base' provider. As soon as you have a layered service provider installed (for example SpamPal), DuplicateHandle won't work and you need to use WSADuplicateSocket. In my case, the Layered Service Provider installed is part of Citrix, the application I use to access work from home. To see if you have any LSP's installed you can run SPORDER.EXE, included in Microsoft's Platform SDK.
