James, I agree with you wholeheartedly. That was my plan all along. However, I needed to see how the various pieces fit together as an exercise/education in remastering DSL/X-DSL. So making a xSlimCD (as it were) was one choice to move me along the learning curve. Since Michael Herger's effort is really nice right out of the box, why reinvent the wheel when I can't remold it to my own needs, using a Knoppix variant specifically designed for the Xbox. Ultimately, I plan on making an InstallCD rather than a LiveCD. This will include automating the partitioning and formatting of a fresh, large hard drive in the Xbox after Cromwell BIOS flash, installing the OS, setting up passwords, SaMBa and SSHd, cron, etc. and then being available on the network workgroup to do what you are suggesting with a backup folder for files/MP3's, etc. The DSL/Knoppix remastering technique allows me to do just that and then "spread the love" among friends who want their own SlimServer using an old Xbox. I was trying to help others along who don't want to hardware mod their Xboxen as a permanent music server with all the bells and whistles. Using a LiveCD remastered for runlevel 2 and an external USB hard drive would avoid the issues of loading up the native Xbox drive and permit a networked listening environment for, say a party in a flat or house with more than one floor or listening area, using a couple of PC's or a laptop with SoftSqueeze and a boombox or stereo.
