The instruction didn't make this clear. In 6.2.x - the skip function only works when you are in AlienBBC mode.
So when you start an stream you can press ffwd and it will skip forward. However once the standard Now Playing screensaver starts up (after 30 secs), the ffwd/rew reverts to non AlienBBC function. To get skip working in "Now Playing" change the screen saver to the Now Playing (Jump on Wake) screen save (I think). Edit: I noticed you are using Fedora - the skip works best if you rebuild Mplayer with the latest CVS.
