OK, some more random thoughts: First, this kind of extension is I'm sure what the designers had in mind when slimserver migrated to using a "proper" database - allowing the options to get at the music in lots of different ways. The one big snag for me at the moment is that, just now, I don't think the database is stable enough - there are so many issues where the answer is "trash the database and start again" that I for one would not be happy with it containing any data that wasn't instantly accessible from somewhere else (e.g. tags). Another advantage of putting any extra info into tags is that you can then use any of many different tagging tools to enter and edit those tags.
Second - I could be wrong about this - I suspect that erland and buddachile may be asking for different things here. As I read it, erland is looking for something like smart playlists, the key feature being that you don't have to tag each piece of music individually. Whereas I think buddachile wants to be able to mark music on a personalised model - which I think would be met by the ability to add a user-defined tag and then browse or search on it. Third, I worry about the use of the term "tree" ... perhaps it wasn't meant this way, but if it means a fixed hierarchy I would not like to see that. I'd really like to be able to browse in as flexible a way as possible.
