Kyle, What you did with JPG extension should only affect the display of files in windows Explorer and Windows common dialog boxes - AFAIK it shouldn't do anything else so perhaps the app is somehow parsing the display and needs the JPG extension.
Are you sure you didn't change something to do with extension file associations at the same time.
