In the player settings, you can select a screensaver which will automatically kick in 30 seconds after the last remote keypress. This will happen regardless of whether music is playing.
There are a number of standard screensavers that come preinstalled with SlimServer, including a Clock screensaver that does exactly what you want. Normally, if a screensaver is being displayed and you press a key, the screen will go back to whichever screen was previously displayed. However, the "Now Playing" screensaver doesn't do this - instead, it stays on the "Now Playing screen when you exit the screensaver. If you want to go back to the previous screen when you exit the screensaver, you should select the "Now Playing (jump back on wake)" screensaver instead.
