For this sort of symptom the network problem is probably between the mplayer app and the BBC server and not the wireless between thr slimserver and the SB. This sounds like it since restarted the stream maskes it work OK. Any idea what is the utilisation of the links between slimserver and internet. Are there bursts of very intensive traffic ?
I think Slimserver does some background processing (disk scan I think) every 30 mins - could this be affecting mplayer ? What are the specs of the system OS, CPU, Ram ?
