Thanks for the quick reply but the problem was actually being caused by me being an idiot!!! I'm guessing (now confirmed) that AlienBBC works much MUCH better if you actually copy mplayer.sh and the other files listed into the Alien folder inside the Slimserver plugins folder . . . what a plonker!!
PS. I edited that line anyway just to make sure.
