I guess my point is that since there isn't an installer that you are sure everyone is going to use, just a simple test for the *presence* of mplayer is all that is needed. As long as mplayer in in the environment path and is called it should work.
The fact that the mplayer folks haven't built a binary for mac in something like 2 years is really the problem here. The old binary doesn't work with alienbbc and obviously the mplayer project page is the most obvious place to look for mplayer.
