When I started to write my first plugin a few months ago the first thing I did was to look at the source of one of the similar already existing plugins. I then started change this plugin so it did what I wanted. In my case I think it was the iTunesUpdate plugin but in your case it sounds like one of the internet radio like plugins would be suitable, maybe the AlienBBC or LastFM plugin ?
