Regaring Direct Sound try under the audio tab of Prefs in SoftSqueeze. I don't have 2.3 installed so I can't check offhand.
The no sound problem is sort of familiar but usually associated with no sound on SqueezeBox so it is odd. You get no sound with (1) RealAudio station ? (2) BBC Podcasts ? (3) WMA stations ?
