The problem was due to changes to Mplayer between 9 Dec 2005 and 10 Dec 2005. Changes were made to fix the "garbled audio" bug. The changes made by the Mplayer developer were not the same as the patch detailed on this forum.
So Mplayer built with the official fix for the Garbled audio has broken R4 LW whereas R4 LW works with Mplayer built using the "unofficial" patch.
