After a couple of port number changes to see if that helped, i got
passed that screen.

You should not have to fiddle with the port settings (I'll have to move them to an "advanced" page...): if you don't know what to put there, you very probably did never change it, so can leave the default value.

In the next release there will be an automatic server detection feature.

What do i need to do to get it working?

A Slimserver and at leaset one client of some sort connected to it (SB, Softsqueeze, Winamp, whatever).

And then, most important: Port 9090 opened on your server's firewall. Please check this setting. As you didn't need it before it probably is still blocked by XP's firewall.

an incorrect port number? If so, how can i get back to the IP/Port
number screen?

It's the last tab "Settings".

FYI, I am using an MDA Vario (WM5) and SlimServer Version 6.2.2 (6583 -
Windows XP - EN - cp1252) with an 'adhoc' wifi set up.

Can you access slimserver's web page using this wifi setup? (http://yourserver:9000/Handheld/)
