Going back to the beginning after checking some Debian specifics - d_plugins in SLIMOPTIONS should have worked but perhaps a logfile wasn't specified and so the output would have gone to stdout and dumped.
Just to confirm the installation - the main BBC station work ? What is the revison of 6.5 or when did you download ? There was a change in 6.5 a few weeks ago which meant 1.03 is not compatible with 6.5 installations made before a specific date.
