Ah-ha! I think I know the problem now, and I just tested to confirm it. It is only connecting when my Axim is in the charge & sync cradle.
Ouch! Is slimserver running on the machine on which the Axim is connected through that sync cradle? Did you open port 9090 in the server's firewall?
