Garbled audio with live BBC is likely to be Mplayer - your version is too old get one built after end Jan 2006 or better still compile your ovwn version.
AlienBC can be used to add station but there are better ways such as Favorites and MyPicks plugin. It depends on the station - however if Tune in doesn't work that indicate other issues but it may be the right URL needs to be found as many are hidden behind popup windows and similar.
