No, the Scrobbler plugin is not actually required for LastFM playback. I just had a look at it and perhaps it's a bit confusing. Firstly, you do have the right player selected in the web interface, ie. the SlimServer LastFM page displays track details etc. when you're playing LastFM?
When you enter a custom station in the text box A) the add button adds it to the list of stations below (and nothing else) B) the play button starts playback or changes to that station (but doesn't save it) And then the page comes back with the box empty. To save a station for regular use, you can also add it in the server settings->internet radio LastFM section. I just tried "artist/beck/similarartists" and it worked fine for me (although on 6.5).
