I did not find it that hard to get SlimCD to run Headless. Here is what I did: -Booted SlimCD on laptop. -Connected a 300GB USB HD -Did a USB Pendrive ZIP install on the USB HD with the following boot switches: 2 ssh nosound (2 boots to shell, ssh starts the ssh deamon and nosound skips the sound module (I dont need that on my server. there are other switches you might benefit from) -The USB install automatically generates 2 partitions -Formated the 2nd partition with FAT32 (has to be done in Linux) -put the samba package in /opt/ -created a smb.conf file and put it in the home folder -modifyed the bootlocal.sh to do the following: --load the samba module --mount the 2. partition --change root password --create a smbpassword for root --start samba -configured the SlimServer -set backup of the SlimCD to the 2nd harddisk
Now I have a 300GB USB disk that boots SlimCD and contains all my music, and If I need it, I can connect the USB disc to my Windows computer and read all my music. I then found a old Thin Client, previously used to access Citrix. It has a 533Mhz VIA chip and 512MB RAM. Granted it is slow when rescanning the music library, but I have absolutly no problems running Slimserver on it. It is completly headless and the squeezebox can wake it using Wake On Lan, so I just powers it off when I'm not using the Squeeze box. If I need to do any config changes I can connect using SSH or I can take the disc and boot it on my laptop. I must say I am very happy with this configuration.
