There was a .slimserver-biography-cache dir under /usr/local/slimserver/. Removed that. Removed any obvious "biography" plugin options from /etc/slimserver.conf.
Still same "Information could not be collected. There might be a network problem. Please try again!" problem. Plugin debug the same, reproduced below. Curious, why does it say "in disk cache" when the cache dir is empty?
