A standard build of mplayer is all that is required now - no patches. Also pre8 is much tidier, all in one download, no need for stuff like live555.
Download tarball from www.mplayerhq.hu such as http://www4.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/MPlayer-1.0pre8.tar.bz2 1. Extract into a directory. 2. cd to directory with configure file 3. execute configure with ./configure 4.
