Many thnaks. I hadn;t gotten round to SoftSqueeze yet - and it's of course the perfect solution, especially as I can npw synch up the office audio (SoftSqeeze running powered speakers off the big PC) with the main house audio (Squeezebox running through conventional hi-fi). Perfect. That BBC Winamp plug-in is useful too.
