Can you play an ordinary MP3 audio file with mplayer ? Are you using Norton 2006 ? If playing a file works then I think the problem lies with accessing the network interface. The probable reason for a crash would be a faulty driver - mplayer is asking the driver for some feature/setup and it causes the driver to crash the system.
