Both TrackStat and standard slimserver will keep track of the number of times a track is played. The difference when installing TrackStat is that the play counts will not be reset every time you perform a full rescan, with only the standard slimserver the play counts will be reset when you perform a full rescan.
None of the alternatives will currently show the play counts when you right click of a track with the remote in the standard browse menus. With TrackStat installed you can view the play counts by right clicking on a track in the TrackStat menu, or by viewing them in the TrackStat web interface.
