Audioscrobbler collected details about what subscribers were playing - and then charted it all (etc) (hence SlimScrobbler to submit Now Playing information).
Last.fm is esentially a personalised internet radio station - where listeners can approve/disapprove of offered tracks and teach it what you want to hear (hence the lastfm plugin to play back the internet radio stream). Both teams started working together some years ago - and then eventually merged into one.
