Problem solved! By replacing the socketwrapper.exe with Ian Cook's version. Now this may sound silly to all you IT guys, but I had simply tried running his "socketwrapper.exe" - I assumed it was mofifying something in the program and had no idea there was such a file to replace in the first place..
To avoid this issue turning up again as a wider non-IT audience get hold of SB, I would suggest making this clearer on http://www.x2systems.com/AlienBBC/faq.html, by replacing "Try Ian Cook's patched socketwrapper from" with something along the lines "Try replacing socketwrapper.exe in the directory C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread with Ian Cook's version:" I am not sure who I should be telling this, but hopefully it gets through somehow.
