Thanks for the responses. I've got enough info to start playing around with this stuff again, now I just need to find some free time in the evening.
I'm a little surprised that slimserver won't play tracks outside it's database. My goal is to keep those files outside the database because they'd pollute it with a bunch of badly tagged singles, so using UpdateOrCreate is less than ideal.
