I don't know. I guess it's mainly a question of development and support ressources. Reduce complexity to reduce support requests. If you want to leave a PC running for MIP, why not just have it run slimserver at the same time?
I assumed that the MusicIP API was plain HTTP, so you would somewhere have specified "http://localhost:$MusicIpPort/api/";...
That's the easy part. The hard part is the file path mapping. This might look as easy as search replace. But once you start users will find ways to break even this simple rule.
