What normally happens is the barker will be dropped when the service
goes online (usually about half an hour before the start of play in the
case of cricket) during which time you'll hear either silence or chit -
chat between the commentator and either BBC Salford or the relevant
local radio station (if the commentator does a live promo into whatever
programme is currently on-air at the time).

Quite often they will simply leave the effects mike open.

You have to remember these are not radio stations - they are commentary
circuits.
