Actually I'm a bit confused by what you are seeing.
iPeng is not supposed to switch servers when it's in the background.
Never.
So something seems to be going wrong here.
Are you sure you didn't switch when the App is open (in the foreground)?
This can happen automatically if your server is not reachable, but
usually only after a minute of use, unless you actually have a player
connected to MySqueezebox.com in which case iPeng follows immediately.
Where are your players, still connected to your local server?
The message you are seeing comes up if MySqueezebox.com is the selected
server but iPeng doesn't have username/password for it stored so the
widget can't use it.

No, it's the other way around.
iPhone Apps NEVER run in the background unless you take specific
action.
In the case of iPeng that would mean to enable the "Preserve Connection"
setting in "iPeng Settings".

It's not about killing it. The main App is usually suspended in the
background (unless you use the setting mentioned above or unless you
play audio in iPeng in the background).
That means it does nothing (and doesn't switch the server) but also
continues from where you left it when it's being brought to the
foreground again.

Apps themselves have no direct influence on this, it's the OS killing
the App in the background if it needs the memory they still use.

Tap the "i" behind MySqueezebox.com in the list of players and music
sources like shown in your screen shot. There's supposed to be some text
associated with this, I'll have to investigate, why it's not being
shown.
The problem is if you registered iPeng with MySqueezebox.com before the
update to iPeng 9.1 that introduced the widget.
Before that, iPeng never stored your MySqueezebox.com username/password
so while the main App could use MySB (because MySB remembers your iPeng
device is registered) the widget could not. Which is when it shows this
message.

Not really, what you are seeing is not really supposed to happen.
