Sirius does the checking via JavaScript so it's not really necessary for the plugin to do it. However, the plugin already simulates "are you there" activity just in case. How long a stream lasts seems to be most determined by your connection to the Internet. I have a connection through Speakeasy (very reliable, quality connections) and I've had streams last over 20hrs.
