I am the author of OrangeCD Suite music cataloging software and,
coincidentally, avid music lover and a big fan of Slim Devices
hardware. I have two Squeezeboxes and am looking greedily at the
Transporter :)
In last version of OrangeCD Suite (6.0.4) I implemented support for
media files playback through Squeezebox, or any other player connected
to SlimServer.
This is a pilot release, so it is pretty limited in features. From the
collection screen in OrangeCD, you can begin playback of any album or
individual songs (right-click menu "Play in Squeezebox"). There is a
separate menu for adding an album or selected tracks to the end of
current playlist ("Queue in Squeezebox"). Multiple Squeezeboxes are
supported - you can choose a player from the list of active players
connected to SlimServer.
Note that OrangeCD maintains its own database of scanned media files
which is completely independent from SlimServer. This means you have to
keep it up-to-date with your music folders which, fortunately, is very
easy to do. On the other hand, separate database means that you can log
many more details to the albums and artists, including notes, reviews,
ratings, credits, lyrics, etc. and manage them more efficiently.
The program can be downloaded from this page:

Architecturally, Squeezebox-related features are contained in a plugin
to OrangeCD Suite, so make sure to select "Squeezebox support plugin"
when installing.
If there's an interest, I'd be happy to implement more features like
playlist management, display of currently played title, ratings,
feeding data in and out SlimServer, etc. Feel free to report any bugs -
preferrably by e-mail or using the web form on the OrangeCD site.
