I'm a happy user of SB and LastFM with SlimScrobbler. But I still don't
understand exactly how lastFM interprets the love/skip/ban updates so
as to determine your music taste - and the last.fm site doesn't seem to
explain either.
Questions that arise include:
1. If you skip a track does that imply you don't like that
artist/track? Or do you have to send a 'ban'?
no and yes.
2. If you listen to a track without sending a skip/ban will lastfm
interpret that as liking that track and therefore tend to choose
similar in the future ?
yes (in fact only 50% or 2 minutes of the track needs to be listened to
- skip after this and it still gets counted)
3. If you hate a particular track will that tend to imply that you hate
that artist also - ie is it better to not send a hate if actually you
like that artist on the whole?
IIRC this is track specific.
4. If you love a track and send a love update, immediately followed by
a skip (because you don't want to listen to that track just now), does
that have a negative interpretation?
there is no 'negative' connotation to the skip command, just that the
play of the track may not be recorded. 'loved' tracks are tracked
separately, so I believe you could possibly have a loved but unplayed track.
3. Is 'neigbour' radio the way to listen to music that you will tend to
like, or 'recommendation'? From the explanation of each, I would expect
'recommendations' to be the way to go, but tend to get obscure tracks
that way, and 'neighbour' seems to give more mainstream selections.
neighbour radio just plays music that your neighbours like.
recommended radio is specifically chosen based on your history.
I would like to know exactly what impact each of love/skip/ban has on
lastfm's interpretation of my tastes so that I can stear it in the
right direction. It does seem to take a lot of listening before it
starts to choose tracks I like, and want to be sure that my listening
and update habits help it get there as quick as possible.
the best way to 'educate' LastFM is to scrobble everything you listen
to, not just LastFM radio.
