There have been instances of lost data in the past - they always get played down though. And I also agree that the LastFM developers focus doesn't seem to agree with what I want any more - but the increasing server slowdowns must mean greater popularity? And there is no-one else that I know of that compares either...
Personally I consider my iTunes database to be my master record of listening habits but LastFM is still an interesting diversion.
