Right, I've had a little bit more of a look and it seems that I was
using a timer objref of 0 caused a timer to be set with undefined
objref.

What this means is: -I've found the bug and timed shutdown of
slimserver now works fine from the remote and you now have the option
of cancelling any timed shutdowns in progress...-

Just one minor point. The applescript above only sends the Mac to sleep
if the user is logged on. The scripts for other OSs should be be okay.
Does anyone know of a script for OS X that will send a Mac to sleep
regardless of whether or not a user is logged on. e.g. the same effect
as clicking sleep from the main login screen.

Could anyone try this out and let me know if it's helpful?

(You'll need to configure the script from the plugins settings in the
web interface and add the Shutdown Server to your main menu for the
Squeezebox if it's not automatically added).
