Downgrading requires manual replacement in the /var/lib/squeezeboxserver/cache/InstalledPlugins/plugins/CastBridge (from memory) by the content you'd find on sourceforge. But frankly there is no modification wrt detection part in the latest version, so it seems much more like a problem on your VM. You can set the additional debug info to all and send me the result, I'll have a look. BTW, when you say "previous version" any idea what it is? I thought you said this version was pretty old.
