I removed and re-installed Spotty / restarted LMS, and changed my
password which previously contained some special characters, but that
did not help.

Please enable INFO logging for plugin.spotty. This will give you the command line which is being used to authenticate (search the log for "password"). Copy that line and paste it to a command window. Replace the asterisks with your password, then run that command. What would that give you?
