I personally found the DateTime screensaver a very straight-forward
starting point/example.

As for plugin development, I just restart SlimServer each time.
Luckily it starts up in a few seconds on my machine. I disable any
unnecessary plugins to speed it up every little bit. I also run it
from the command line so I can see what's going on and enable -d_plugin
debugging. Control-C quickly brings it down and then I just up
arrow/enter to start it up again (after waiting a couple seconds for
everything to close nicely). This is on a XP machine.

Good luck!
-Greg
