I've seen this with other users - the akamai CDN seems to be better at
blocking VPNs than Limelight.

Direct strreaming means natively playing http/MP3, AAC and WMA only
stream from the player bypassing LMS.  The BBC DASH and HLS streams are
totally handled in LMS so this setting has no effect. Also LMS checks a
stream before telling a player - so inital DNS lookup is done by LMS
(it's why mysqueezebox.com fails to play UK only stream for UK users as
mysb servers are not in UK).

I really don't know as nothing has changed in the initial URLs.  I kknow
that HLS stream handling have been changed by BBC recently and you had
HLS as 1st preference so perhaps bad timing.
A mystery but not worth actively wasting more time on now you have a
fix.
