The mkfifo was thre first way we worked out a way around no /dev/fd as I preferred to leave mplayer unmodified. This is the thhread - post #25 gives you the details -basicaly the fifo replaces /dev/fd3 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=132201
