Now resolved by following this guide: https://stackpointer.io/network/ssh-port-forwarding-tcp-udp/365/ - basically you need to use socat to put the UDP packets through a TCP tunnel. However, the pops and crackles I had with squeezelite are also present with SqueezePlay...
