I do however have problems with song names or artist names in Danish
language containing the Danish special characters: æøå and their
uppercase variants ÆØÅ.

Generally the plugin does not locate lyrics for these songs - and I
wonder if it is due to the encoding of artist and song names or it is
because the lyrics do not exist in the databases searched?

I think it can be both. I'm seeing similar issues with Swiss music. Hardly any song would be available from these services. And sometimes (not always - don't ask for a rule...) the umlauts and accents break. The two service I'm currently using don't behave the same way. And sometimes even the data they send back has invalid encryption.

Never mind, I have many of these lyrics in text files already and want
to place them in the user-supplied lyrics folder for being shown on the
controller devices that we use in our house. Again, I need information
on how to encode the names correctly.

Now that's a good question... why don't you embed the files in the tracks?

I'm using a function we have in LMS which would "normalize" many aspects of names, incl. transliteration for languages like Chinese, Russian etc. But I wouldn't know by heart what it all does.
