FWIW, I have a ~3Mbps connection and I never have dropouts or pauses
(on the high quality stream).  I'm using the default buffer setting and
30 seconds for the timeout.

One thing you could do is check to see if the same problem happens
using the "official" Sirius player, to see if it's a connection problem
or a slimserver problem.

Also, have you checked slimserver's memory usage?  It may be just me,
but lately I've seen it use up almost all my 1GB of RAM and most of the
swap file.  Restarting slimserver fixes it (at least for while...)
